Large Hadron Collider song remixed Sep 26

I couldn’t let it lie. Having recorded my Large Hadron Collider Song the other day, I wondered if I could take advantage of my lovely Zoom H2recorder to up the production values a bit. Separating singing and playing the ukulele also meant I could do the latter marginally better – my inability to multitask different rhythms is why I could never be a pianist.

So, with nothing better to do this morning, I re-recorded the song with a more syncopated ukulele track. I added in some vocals – 12 rather than 40 voices – and then decided to fill the music out a bit with a guitar line (actually two tracks in the end). The guitar and the uke tuning weren’t quite together so I ended up lowering the pitch of the ukulele track by a semitone. What a cheat.

In case you can’t make out the words, I’ve published a Google Doc with the lyrics and chords.

Anyhoo, for your listening pleasure…

The Pod Delusion on party conference Sep 25

The other day I mentioned The Pod Delusion, a new podcast to which I’m contributing.

Episode 2 is out today and subjects include homeopathy, NHS cuts and the BNP on Question Time. My piece – “if it’s not sung, if it’s spoken, it’s a piece” – is a quick guide to party conference, and in particular Lib Dem conference, for those who’ve never been to one.

The Large Hadron Collider Song Sep 25

As a freelance scientist – er, ex-physicist – I can’t help taking an interest in the particle physics research planned for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. And as one of teh internets’ numerous ukuleleists, I can’t help writing a short song about it and putting it on my blog. Happy Friday.

The Pod Delusion Sep 23

Pod Delusion logoA belated plug for The Pod Delusion, a new podcast in which I’m implicated.

Co-ordinated and edited by living legend James O’Malley, it’s a From Our Own Correspondent style collection of short pieces from various contributors. The podcast itself has a sceptical/liberal/Guardianista bent and the first episode covers issues like religion-funded academies, Charles Darwin and, in my case, Derren Brown.

You can listen on the Pod Delusion website or via iTunes and – of course – follow the podcast on the twitter. I may or may not be in episode 2, depending on whether I pull my finger out 🙂

And while I’m on the subject of podcasts, a plug for The Trap Sodcast, on which my voice has made a few fleeting appearances thanks to their listener quiz. Do have a listen.
