Set your video/DVD recorder/hard disc recorder/magic space box for Channel 4 at 3.30pm tomorrow (Tuesday) – or, if you’re not in gainful employment or work from home, just switch on the TV – for I will be a contestant on long-running cult afternoon game show Countdown.

I read on Jonathan Calder’s blog the sad news that Julian Cummins has died suddenly at just 52. I knew Julian from Yorkshire and the Humber regional party conferences and from the Leeds Liberal Democrats, where he was a keen activist and a former councillor. He was always friendly, encouraging and keen to get younger members of the party involved in its activities.

I’m currently in Heysel, on the edge of Brussels, where I’ve managed successfully since arriving last night on a smattering on schoolboy French.
Thought I’d blog from the Atomium, where I am right now. It’s based on a molecule of iron and I’m in a giant silver atom now, making it, via a bad pun, literally a blog-o-sphere.
