Love Don’t Roam Jan 15

In the background of the wedding reception scene in 2006’s Doctor Who Christmas special The Runaway Bride, you might have heard Neil Hannon (off of the Divine Comedy) singing a rather good little song. It’s called Love Don’t Roam and was written for the episode.

It’s available on the Who soundtrack album and really should have been released as a single, but hasn’t been. In the olden days, that would have precluded it from entering the charts, but now that downloads can make the Top 40, a concerted effort will get it the exposure it deserves.

So, if you’ve not heard it, go and pay your 79p on iTunes (or your preferred legal download provider), and bask in it’s catchiness; if you have heard it, you’ll already want to download it as I’ve done. (Hat-tip.)

Cutout Doctor Jan 05

Cardboard Doctor This cutout figure was standing, for no obvious reason, at the edge of College Green opposite Parliament earlier in the week. (Best picture I could get on my phone in the evening light.)

It looked like it had microphones on the back of the shoulders and there was one of those temporary red and white striped huts nearby which could have had a camera in. Best guess anyone’s come up with is that it was in aid of David Tennant’s appearance on tonight’s episode of The Friday Night Project on Channel 4. Not sure if I can stomach Justin Lee Collins long enough to find out.

Happy New Year Jan 01

Thank you for your visits and comments in 2006 and I hope you have a happy 2007.

And what better way to bring in the new year than with Doctor Who and ABBA? (This is a rhetorical question.)

And a Riso in a pear tree Dec 24

Helping one of my flatmates to move in yesterday afternoon has left my muscles aching today. It was all the usual stuff: boxes, shelves, lamps, furniture – and a Risograph. This monstrous device was extremely heavy – I’m prepared to believe it literally weighed a ton. It took three of us stopping and starting to get it up four flights of stairs to the second floor and I’m suffering for it today. On the plus side, we now have a Riso in the flat so can print subversive literature like old skool Communist revolutionaries. Or photograph body parts when drunk.

Moving the sofa up the small stairwell was equally entertaining, although fortunately we didn’t quite achieve what would have been an Only Fools and Horses style comedy classic by dropping it over the second floor balcony as we tried to balance it at an angle in order to get it through the not-quite-large-enough front door of the flat. Having succeeded, we celebrated with mulled wine and mince pies, and then a cash machine at London Bridge rather inconvenienced me my gobbling my bank card like a Christmas turkey. They told me 4-5 working days to replace it, so some time in 2007…

Don’t forget that Doctor Who and the Runaway Bride is on tomorrow evening (BBC One at 7pm) and may Santa bring you the capitalist material possessions you so desperately desire 🙂

And incidentally, a Happy Christmas to all of you at home.
