Julian Cummins Feb 12

I read on Jonathan Calder’s blog the sad news that Julian Cummins has died suddenly at just 52. I knew Julian from Yorkshire and the Humber regional party conferences and from the Leeds Liberal Democrats, where he was a keen activist and a former councillor. He was always friendly, encouraging and keen to get younger members of the party involved in its activities.

There are more obituaries on Liberal Democrat Voice and the regional party website.

Hello from the blogosphere Feb 10

I’m currently in Heysel, on the edge of Brussels, where I’ve managed successfully since arriving last night on a smattering on schoolboy French.

Thought I’d blog from the Atomium, where I am right now. It’s based on a molecule of iron and I’m in a giant silver atom now, making it, via a bad pun, literally a blog-o-sphere.

1911 census to be released early Feb 06

Great news from the Archives: the 1911 census of England and Wales will get an early release following a ruling by the Information Commissioner in favour of a genealogist who was seeking information under FoI rules.

An online version will go live in 2009, 3 years earlier than planned, with a some sensitive data excised until 2012. A limited £45 per search service will be available until 2009.

Update: You can find the 1911 census at www.1911census.co.uk

Blame for warming pinned on man Feb 02

BBC headline: Blame for warming pinned on man. Alas, the article doesn’t continue thus:

Climate change scientists have identified the cause of global warming, a 44-year-old man from Grimsby. Steven Waters, a council worker, said he was “stunned” to learn that he was responsible but would be taking the news on board and switching to energy-saving lightbulbs immediately.
