You may have spotted… Mar 29

…that there is a renovation going on. Blogger’s being a bit troublesome but once it gets up to speed I’ll hopefully get the switch over with.

In the mean time, my old blog is at http://www.willhowells.org.uk/blogger/

Nice! Good luck with getting to grips with WordPress — it will all be worth it in the end!

And another one makes the move. Looks good so far, good luck and hope nothin gets broken – but if I can do it without breaking stuff, anyone can.

Gradually getting there. Not sure I’m going to stick with this theme but I do want a three column format. Only problems so far was the import, which went largely OK but lost my name from the posts, and the blog description which has to be all on one line with no HTML (and therefore I’ve put it straight into the template file).

At some point, I might try to get a logo to replace the heading.

Are there any essential plugins I should get?

Regarding plugins, I reckon Spam Karma is a must – but it depends on what you’re wanting. There is a hack that you can do that apparently works well, but I don’t like the sound of it since it just gets rid of everything that it thinks is spam, so it may lose legitimate comments.

Your blog seems to be pretty spam-free at the moment anyway!

Well, I don’t know which work in 1.5, and which are just included generally, but I’m using:

    Comment count/comment word count
Post count/post word count – which generate the number of posts/comments and word counts at the bottom of the page (here’s where you say ‘I never noticed that’)
NoFollow – which autmoatically puts the ‘nofollow’ tag on all links posted in comments to stop any spam that gets through from having an effect on pagerank
Witty Text – to generate the random quote at the top right of the page
Auto comment moderation – which autmoatically puts all comments on posts that have been inactive for seven days into the moderation queue

And if you want it, I can send you a copy of my blacklist for comment moderation which has various IPs and URLs in that have tried spamming me in the past.

Just so that you know, WP 1.5 already automatically puts rel=”nofollow” in comment URLs, so there’s no need for a plugin using 1.5.
